Carolyn Cole- A heavily oiled pelican flounders on the beach at East Grand Terre Island in Barataria Bay, La.
(Carolyn Cole / Los Angeles Times / June 4, 2010)
This photograph captures a single scene of the horrific events surrounding the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. This photo was taken on the beach at East Grand Terre Island in Barataria Bay, Louisiana near the center of the spills impact. The plight of the bird would be substantially diminished to the viewer if the photo where black and white. The color is critical to show the severity of the situation. The pelican is completely overcome by the invasion of the oil in its environment.
